Excerpt from The Study of the Human Face: Illustrated by Twenty-Six Full-Page Steel Engravings
Although it must be admitted that that which requires an excuse for being printed, ought not to be printed at all, yet an explanation, at least, must be conceded to those who may venture to undertake an exposition of the Physiognomical Art; as, from its personal and uncompromising nature, it is difiicult and dangerous for any individual to risk an illustra tration of it without seeming to take the severities of the science upon his own shoulders. If, however, a preface may be allowed to supersede an apology, the following statement will be no less due in defence of the science than in vindica tion of the work itself.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book is a study of how the face reveals the mind, and how the outward form reflects the inward character. This study has a long history. The author cites ancient techniques and references to the subject in ancient texts, discusses the decline of the art, and outlines the renewed interest in modern times in the field of psychology. Facial expressions correspond to mental states and dispositions, and the author's aim is to link particular lines and configurations of the face to particular qualities of mind and character, creating a 'physiognomical art', to be used as an aid to understanding the true nature of those around us. This book will be invaluable to students of the mind, whether amateur or professional, and to anyone wishing to use a scientific approach to understanding the relationship between mind and body.
