Excerpt from A Manual of Spherical and Practical Astronomy, Vol. 2: Embracing the General Problems of Spherical Astronomy, the Special Applications to Nautical Astronomy, and the Theory and Use of Fixed and Portable Astronomical Instruments; Theory and Use of Astronomical Instruments; Method of Least Squares
The line of sight is he straight line drawn from the thread through the optical centre of the objective; for this line repro sents the direction of a,distant point (as a star), when the tele scope is so directed that an image of the point is formed at the thread. This line is also called the line of collimation; but we shall hereafter, for the sake of brevity, call it the sight-zine.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the intricate world of astronomical instruments, providing a comprehensive guide to their theory and practical applications. The author, writing in a period when astronomical observation was undergoing significant advancements, meticulously explores the tools that enabled astronomers to chart the heavens with ever-increasing precision. From magnifying power to angle measurement, the book meticulously examines the principles behind these instruments, dissecting their individual components and their collaborative role in achieving accurate observations. The author's deep understanding of optics and mechanics shines through as they guide readers through the complexities of lenses, mirrors, and graduated circles, explaining concepts like spherical and chromatic aberration, and the function of the vernier scale. The book goes beyond mere descriptions, however, illuminating the subtle interplay between instrument design and the very nature of observation itself. The author grapples with issues like the impact of refraction on readings, the inherent imperfections of instruments, and the need to account for personal bias in recording data. In a testament to the importance of these insights, the author delves into the method of least squares, a statistical tool used to refine astronomical observations and minimize the impact of errors. Ultimately, this book offers not just a practical guide to using astronomical instruments, but a compelling examination of the scientific and philosophical considerations that shaped the development of this critical field.
