Excerpt from Modern Musical Composition: A Manual for Students
This book is not written for the Amateur, the Critic, the Theorist or the Antiquarian: it is a wholly technical treatise and an attempt to supply the needs of the earnest music-student; needs which I have studied for over twenty five years. To summarise one's own knowledge, to analyse and tabu late the works of the great masters of old, may be very interesting to the cultured reader, but I have found it of very little assistance to the learner. The student finds the idiom of the past irksome and repellent; it is the ver hacular that he desires to learn: he does not wish to take as his models the unapproachable gods of antiquity, but his immediate contemporaries.
