Edward John Hopkins, celebrated as a player on the organ and a writer on the history and construction of the instrument, and also a composer of much church music of the best and purest kind, held the office of Organist of the Temple Church for fifty-four years, namely from 1843 to 1897, and during all that time maintained the music of the Church services at a high level of excellence. As a writer of services and hymns he could scarcely be surpassed in his day. The additions to and alterations of the Organ made during the period in which he was organist were carried out under his direétion.
