In the process of selection, I have, as was inevitable, experienced much difficulty; and I am fully conscious that, though I have taken the utmost care to do full justice to every aspect of my subject, I may yet be accused of sins both of omission and commission; for every reader brings an individual standard of taste to the judgment of an author, and what may interest one will doubtless be tedious to others, who in their turn will be disposed to yawn over the pet topics of the first. I have, however, striven (and I hope to some extent successfully) to furnish the table of my ordinary with adue regard to all sorts of appetites, as well as to the fact that the vast amount of ground to be gone over inevitably restricted me to representative features in the History of the Edinburgh Stage.
