Excerpt from The Inheritance
Mrs. St. Clair. So far all was kind and conciliating; and the exiles, after much delay, set forth upon their journey, according to the rules prescribed by the Earl - but, within a day's journey of Paris, Mrs. St. Clair was taken prematurely ill, and there, at an obscure village, gave birth to a daughter, which, as Mr. St. Clair sensibly remarked, though not so good as a boy, was yet better than nothing at all. As the salique law was not in force in the Rossville family, the sex of the child was indeed a mat ter of little consequence, save in the eyes of such as are sturdy sticklers for man's supremacy. Its health and strength were therefore the chief objects of consideration; and, although pre maturely introduced into life, it was a remarkably fine thriving baby, which Mrs. St. Clair, contrary to the common practice of mothers, ascribed entirely to the excellence of its nurse.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the intricate dynamics of family, pride, and societal expectations in 19th-century Britain. The story centres on Gertrude, a young woman of obscure origins who becomes the heiress to a noble Scottish family, the Rossvilles. Through Gertrude's journey, the author explores the complexities of social class and the clash between old-world aristocracy and new-money ambition. The narrative unfolds against the backdrop of a society grappling with evolving notions of status, wealth, and personal identity. As Gertrude navigates her newfound position, she encounters a cast of characters, each embodying different facets of the social hierarchy. Lord Rossville, the embodiment of aristocratic pride and tradition, attempts to mould Gertrude into his vision of a proper lady, while her mother, driven by ambition and a desire to reclaim her lost status, seeks to exploit her daughter's inheritance for personal gain. Amidst these conflicting influences, Gertrude's own character and values begin to take shape. The author skillfully portrays the internal struggles faced by individuals caught between societal pressures and personal aspirations, highlighting themes of identity, self-discovery, and the enduring power of family bonds. Ultimately, this book offers a poignant reflection on the human condition, revealing how the pursuit of status and wealth can both elevate and corrupt, and how true nobility lies not in lineage but in the strength of one's character.
