Excerpt from The Marplot
AS he drove down to the docks the quiet streets reminded him that it was Sunday. It was twelve o'clock before he found the Candia, lying among the grim warehouses near the Tower, and he observed her deserted appearance with some anxiety as he went on board. At first he saw no one on deck, but presently discovered a sailor leaning over the bul warks, smoking. The Professor approached, and in his most courteous manner his politeness was of a more formal type than is common now asked him if the captain was on board.
