Excerpt from Practical Child Training, Vol. 2: Easy Lessons for Teaching Obedience in the Home
First of all, assume an optimistic, cheerful attitude; lead the child by the hand over to the chairs. Sit down in the rocking-chair and place the child, facing you, at your left knee. Immediately take the watch and chain from your pocket, hold the watch up to your right ear and look up to the ceiling as though you were listening closely.
After holding it up to your ear for five or six seconds, put the watch in your left hand, reach out with your right and pull the straight chair up in front of your right knee. Immediately place the watch on the nearest corner of the chair and quickly put your hand up to your Car as though trying to hear the watch tick.
