Excerpt from The Canadian Engineer, Vol. 30: January June, 1916
A number of cities having supplies of naturally very hard waters, like Columbus, Ohio, have in recent years installed water softening plants as well as filtration, while at other plants iron removal, or removal of color, is ao complished as part of the purification process.
Water Filtration. - Stimulated by wide dissemination of modern ideas of sanitation, water filtration in the United States has made great progress during the past decade. The population supplied by filtered water, as shown by Table l., has increased from in 1904, to in 1914. As late as 1903 only about 60 cities and towns were supplied with filtered water, while there are now some 480 filter plants in this country with a total capacity of gallons per day. These filters serve per cent. Of the urban population, while in 1904 only per cent. Of the urban population (includ ing all towns of over population) was so supplied.
