Excerpt from Mosaic: System Description, Specification and Planning
As an Open-system, a machine tool is equipped with a general purpose computer, such as a PC or a workstation, enhanced with additional standard computer hardware, that con trols the axes of motion and the various devices, and manages programs and data. Communi cation utilizes networks that are universally accepted in the computer world, and thus resources may be shared as needed. The machine is adaptable to the changing environment and tasks, in terms of its controller's computer configuration, and in terms of the mechanical construction.
The mosaic controller is specified and designed especially for the projected self sustaining Open-system future environment Of machine tools. The concept (and it nyu implementation in brackets) is based on a general purpose computer (a Sun workstation), running a standard operating system (unix), programmed in a standard programming language (c), and having a standard hardware (vmebus). It provides a flexible environ ment that can drive the machine, the manipulators and the sensors. It can be configured as a controller for a single machine or for multiple machines. It uses the most advanced features Of today's computer technology, such as high and expandable computational power, graphic user interface, and support Of a variety Of communication networks. It benefits from the huge market Of hardware and software Of standard computer equipment provided by third party vendors. Also, with the current trends in the general purpose computer industry, the con troller is expected to have a good price-performance ratio.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book details the design and implementation of the MOSAIC system, an open-architecture controller designed for the next generation of self-reliant machine tools. The author posits that this open-system computer technology is well-suited for the multitasking, multi-sensory environment of tomorrow's machine tools. The author begins by introducing the concept of a self-sustaining machine tool before explaining the general configuration of a generic controller system and its contents. Through a discussion of the hardware and software used to implement the system, the author reveals the technical challenges that were overcome to create this machine. Finally, the author explores some of the future applications for the system, such as closed-loop force and torque control and the use of an expert system for machining. The insights in this book on machine control are significant and will be of interest not only to manufacturing and mechanical systems engineers but also to computer scientists and programmers. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 9781334180774_0
