These samplers were water cooled and were connected with rubber hose to a water supply and drain pipe, the latter serving also as a support for the stack. The author focuses on three different samples of this tar, the first from a slowly burning Pennsylvania coal, the second from a rapidly burning coal of the same type, and the third from a rapidly burning Illinois coal. Each sample was carefully collected over several months to achieve the small volume necessary for analysis. The author's results indicate that in the hottest furnaces, volatile matter emitted by the coal is the same as the so-called primary volatile products of coal, which, after being produced, yield carbon monoxide, water vapor, end products of carbon (soot) and fixed gases, through burning and cracking processes, respectively. The two processes should be seen as acting at the same time and in coordination.
