The author, a member of the Engineers Club of St. Louis, presents a compilation of data gathered by bridge workers that spans a full year, from September 1883 to September 1884, illustrating the extent of the creeping issue. The author offers a clear explanation of the creeping phenomenon, exploring the various theories and causes assigned to the movement, including the effects of grades, stopping trains on a down-grade, the tapping or pounding of wheels, the deflection of the bridge itself by the train load, the distortion of the arch, and the paening of the rail. After examining each of these theories, the author proposes an explanation based on the wave motion of the rail, arguing that the rail rolls itself across the bridge on its extended or outer side, and that the total train effect or movement for one train is proportional to the tonnage of the train, with the rate of creeping increasing in proportion to the length of the structure. The author concludes by suggesting a solution to the creeping issue, proposing that the rail be supported under its head, which would eliminate the tendency for the rail to move, thereby reducing the strain on the structure and the ongoing maintenance required to correct the movement.
