Excerpt from An Order to View: A Novel
Wedmore sent in his card with a request for an order to view the property he had seen advertised. Mr. Till himself, in breeches and gaiters, came out from the inner office with a great smell of Harris tweed, the card in his hand and a smile of respectful recognition at the name, on his weather-beaten face. Among the paper symbols of his trade he looked like the embodiment of real estate - his bluff appearance affecting Wedmore like the ships among the houses outside.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book follows architect James Wedmore on a journey of the heart that begins with a chance encounter with an advertisement for an upcoming property auction. The property is a small 15th-century manor house named Moorend, set on 60 acres of land, that was owned by the late Guy Woodruff, a renowned author. When James visits the property on a fine September afternoon, he is captivated by its charm, despite the obvious neglect. His conversation with Mr. Woodruff's son and daughter, who are living there before the house is sold, reveals that they are keen to escape the responsibility of maintaining the property and that the young musician son is particularly excited about the prospect of moving to London. James's interest in Moorend deepens, and he becomes aware of a strange tension between his head and his heart. On the one hand, he knows that the impracticalities of Moorend make it a difficult choice for a home, particularly one to share with his practical, organized, and ambitious fiancà e. On the other hand, his heart is stirred by both the beauty of the house and the daughter of its owner, Miss Beatrice Woodruff.
