Inhaltsangabe

This book is the product of collaboration between a young man and his former professor, who reunites with him as a fellow guest at a high-society party. The reunited pair confront the gulf between their world views, leading to an eye-opening series of discussions on morality, ambition, intellectual pursuits, the pursuit of pleasure, and the role and value of wealth, education, social status, and privilege. The author explores the tension between theory and practice and the competing demands of self-interest and idealism. Throughout the discussions, the author grapples with what constitutes a meaningful and worthwhile life, and the role society plays in shaping or hindering purpose. The author seeks to identify the true measure of a man, reflecting on the thinkers and ideas that have shaped the Western understanding of morality and personal virtue.
