Certainly not the least important pages of the Criminal Trials are those which deal with the history of Ayrshire. Its sons of these days were the immediate inheritors of the warlike traditions of their forefathers. They were early trained to arms, to the excitement of the foray, to the heritage of the blood feud. They pricked their way by river's brink and hilly road from the farthest stretch of the broad lands of Carrick, the solitudes of the moorlands and the mosses of Kyle, and from the rude upland wilds amid which Cunningham marches with Renfrewshire, to carry on a series of conflicts whose tenacity and thoroughness were truthfuny characteristic of the unswerving fidelity with which these men discharged themselves of their sympathies and their antipathies. There is no parish in all Ayrshire that has not a literature of its own, if some one were only found to tell its story.
