The advantages resulting from the use of the same standard scale of temperature are of course at once obvious. Only a few years ago, before the introduction of the International Hydrogen Scale, investigators frequently spent far more time in setting up a gas thermometer and establishing a temperature scale to which to refer their measurements than in carrying out their experiments. A familiar illustration is furnished by the classical determinations by Rowland of the mechanical equivalent of heat and the capacity for heat of water. A further great advantage in a single standard scale at once available to every investigator, aside from the great saving in time, is that all measurements expressed on that scale, made by different methods and by different observers, can be compared with one another with the greatest advantage, and outstanding differ ences very often explained. Thus a comparison of the best deter minations of the mechanical equivalent of heat, carried out by me chamical and electrical methods, showed a difference amounting to about I part in 400, and the two methods gave a different variation of the capacity for heat of water with the temperature.
