The first technique, an irregular wave model, builds upon the method of Goda (1975) which was based on the assumption of irregular waves with varying wave height and period. The second method used in this book is the Shore Protection Manual (SPM) method developed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Through an analysis of 21 different wave conditions, the authors demonstrate the strengths and weaknesses of both techniques when predicting nearshore wave heights. Readers will also find empirically derived guidelines for using the irregular wave model, which will be useful for both coastal scientists and engineers.
