This very interesting Monastery, the ruins of which are situated in a romantic spot not far from the renowned city of Durham, was founded late in the reign of Henry II. And was inhabited by Benedictine monks, owing obedience to the parent monastery of that place. The extreme beauty of their situation, has given to the Ruins of Finchale a mo dern celebrity, especially ln the north of England, which is hardly less extensive than the antient fame for sanctity and learning which was awarded to Finchale in the days when it was eminent among the fair monasteries that once adorned our land. Its ruins are accordingly sought out year after year by many a tourist, and (not very cappropriately) by many a gay and thoughtless pleasure party: but the early and monastic history of Finchale is little known, and few of those who come to experience the enchantment of the scene, cherish more than mere transient curiosity to know something of the events which there occurred and excited emotions and passions that have been for ages extinguished in the grave These ruins were the hallowed object of a pilgrimage by the writer on a recent occasion and he hopes the following sketch of the history of Finchale may be ac ceptable to the general reader, for the interest which attaches to that history is by no means confined to the ecclesiastical antiquary.
