To the beft of my recollection, when I talked to you lafi Noveméer of a Pre face to thefe Volumes, I had fome thoughts of opening a fcene, which would have expofed to view feveral things which are fiill involved in dark nefs. But, as I have neither youth, leifure, nor inclination, to engage in altercations of any fort, I think it is better to pofipone what I have prin cipally to fay relating to thefe matters, and particularly to the fubjeé't of Dr. Swrrt's Writings, until a more conve nient and proper feafon; when per haps it will be thought early enough to inform the curious, by what a firange variety of accidents the Do cron's Works have happened to make their appearance in (0 diforderly, uncouth, and miferable a condition (to fay nothing of a thou.
