Excerpt from A Compend of Inorganic Chemistry<br/><br/>Chemistry is that science which investigates the laws governing the movements of the atoms and molecules of which all things, animate and inanimate, are composed; and has been divided into organic and in organic. All substances may be divided chemically into compound and simple. A compound body can be separated and its constituents shown; a simple one cannot. Elementary or simple bodies are 68 in number, and differ widely in their normal physical condition; thus, some are gases, one is a liquid, but the greater number are solids.
