Excerpt from The Evolution of Man, Vol. 2: A Popular Scientific Study; Human Stem-History or Phylogeny
Hence each of the sedimentary strata has its characteristic fossils, the remains of the animals and plants that lived during that particular period of the earth's history. \vhen we make a comparative study of these strata, we can survey the whole series of such periods. All geologists are now agreed that we can demonstrate a definite historical suc cession in the strata, and that the lowest of them were deposited in very remote, and the uppermost in comparatively recent, times. However, there is no part of the earth where we find the series of strata in its entirety, or even approxi mately complete. The succession of strata and of corres ponding historical periods generally given in geology is an ideal construction, formed by piecing together the various partial discoveries of the succession of strata that have been made at different points of the earth's surface (cf. Chapter XVIII.)

This captivating exploration delves into the intriguing relationship between humans and our invertebrate ancestors, unveiling the profound evolutionary insights hidden within the structure of the amphioxus and the ascidian. The author draws striking parallels between these seemingly disparate creatures, revealing the remarkable similarities that connect us to the humble beginnings of vertebrate life. By examining the embryology of these marine organisms and comparing them to our own, the author meticulously reconstructs the path of human evolution, tracing our roots back to the earliest stages of animal development. The book sheds light on the fundamental laws that govern our biological heritage, exploring the processes of curtailed and disturbed heredity that have shaped the diversity of life on Earth. This illuminating work goes beyond mere scientific inquiry, using these comparisons to explore the broader philosophical implications of human existence. It challenges us to reconsider our place in the natural order and encourages us to embrace the profound interconnectedness of all living things. By unraveling the secrets of our evolutionary past, the author provides a deeper understanding of the intricate tapestry of life, revealing the unity that binds us to the natural world.
