Excerpt from The Middle Classes (Les Petits Bourgeois)
The book, when in his letters Balzac spoke of it as first nearly finished and then actually 'set up,' bore the title of Les Petits Bourgeois de Paris, but nobody seems to have seen the ms. Or the proofs. It actually appeared in the Pay: during the autumn of 1854, and was afterwards issued as a book by the publisher de Potter in eight vol umes - four bearing the present title in 1856, and the other four as Les Parvenus in 1857. The first part had twenty-seven, and the second twenty-five chapter divi sions with headings. M. De Lovenjoul does not mention whether there was any special authority for the suppres sion of these when the book was at last, a few years ago, made part of the Comedte, or whether it was done in accordance with Balzac' s usual practice.

This book thoughtfully explores the lives of the lesser bourgeoisie in Paris during the July Monarchy and examines how the lives of its main characters intersect and entwine. Set against the backdrop of a society in flux, the novel focuses on the trials, tribulations, and occasional joys of the Thuillier household and their circle, as they navigate their way through financial challenges, social aspirations, and personal heartache. The author provides a detailed and evocative portrait of middle-class life in 19th century Paris, examining the ways in which the characters' aspirations and motivations are shaped by their socio-economic circumstances. Through its depiction of the Thuillier family and their friends, the book delves into themes of ambition, love, loss, and the sacrifices people make in the name of family and social status. The novel stands as a valuable contribution to the realistic literature of the period, offering insights into the dynamics of a specific social class during a transformative era in French history, giving readers a glimpse into the lives and struggles of those often overlooked in historical narratives.
