Excerpt from Money: How to Get, How to Keep, and How to Use It; A Guide to Fortune
To gain money is the immediate object of all business in civilized society. The business of savages is to run down game for a meal, and knock one another 3a the head as they dispute fora scanty supply of food. Civilized men kindly help each other and exchange services for services; and amongst them money is the instrument for measuring the exchange, and the test of the value of the services. The philosophy which effects to teach us a contempt of money, says Mr. Taylor, in his Notes from Life's, does not run very deep for so manifold are the bearings of money upon the lives and character of mankind, that an insight which would search out the life of a man in his pecuniary relations would penetrate into almost every cranny of his nature. If we take account of all the virtues with which money is mixed up - honesty, justice, generosity, charity, frugality, forethought, self-sacri fice, and of their correlative vices, it is a knowledge which goes near to cover the length and breadth of humanity; and a right measure and manner in getting, saving, spending, giving, taking, lending, borrowing, and bequeathing, would almost argue a perfect man.
