Excerpt from Great Providences Toward the Loyal Part of This Nation: A Discourse Delivered at an United Service of the Seven Presbyterian Congregations of Buffalo, November 24, 1864, on Occasion of the Annual Thanksgiving Both of the State and of the Nation
Since last we. Met in this annual convocation, three hundred and sixty new pages in the uh folding journal of Providence have been devel oped to each of us and written out with unseen fingers for eternity. Here are recorded certain general blessings - upon which for the reasons soon to be stated we can only touch to-day - that have descended upon us in com mon with all our fellow men in every part of the world, from the parental Hand above.
Although it is little that some of us may think of it, it is written on those now invisible pages for a testimony to the goodness of God.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book analyzes the causes and consequences of the American Civil War from the perspective of a religious service that occurred in 1864. The author draws from historical documents, speeches, and the writings of key figures to demonstrate that those fighting against the Union were motivated by a desire to preserve a slave-holding oligarchy rather than a genuine fear of oppression. The author notes that slavery has always been a point of contention in the United States, and that the Civil War was the culmination of decades of debate and conflict over its morality and legality. The author argues that the war, while costly in terms of human life and resources, was ultimately necessary to preserve the Union and end the scourge of slavery.
