The author's investigation spans a period of almost two decades, from 1815 to 1840. They argue that these laws have caused a great deal of inequality and fluctuation in the price of wheat. Moreover, these fluctuations have been greater than those experienced in any of our distant colonies. The author posits that the fluctuations have arisen from the inequality in supply, despite the tendency of grain to maintain an equality of value. They further argue that the Corn Laws are the cause of extremely low prices on the Continent, as protective duties often lead to an overabundance of capital and labor, subsequently causing a surplus of production and stock. This excess of production and stock then leads to a lavish and inconsiderate use of the great necessary of life, which then forces farmers to lessen their cultivation. The book concludes with an argument against the Corn Laws, emphasizing the ways in which their repeal could benefit the economy.
