It was the practice of Irish farmers to wear out their ground with ploughing, neither manuring nor letting it lie fallow, and when their leases were near expired, they ploughed even the meadows, and made fuch havock, that the landlords by their zeal to prevent it were betrayed into this pernicious measure.
A sea port in Devonshire, at that time the principal market in England for Irish wool.

William Wood was granted a patent by the English crown in 1722 to produce copper coins for Ireland. However, the Irish people believed the coins, produced from a mixture of copper and brass, were significantly less valuable than the amount for which they were intended to pass. Led by the author, the Irish people resisted attempts by the English Crown to force acceptance of this currency and ultimately succeeded in having the patent withdrawn in 1725.
