Excerpt from An Introduction to the Mathematical Theory of Attraction
Towards the close of the last century the science of Electricity began to be developed, and imparted a new and a wider interest to the Theory of Attraction. Fresh problems were offered for solution, and new modes of treatment were devised by Physicists, among whom Gauss, Green, and Thomson have been pre-eminent. The rapid progress of the sciences of Electricity and Magnetism has been continually increasing the direct value of the Theory of Attraction, but its indirect value has become perhaps still greater.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book delves deep into the Theory of Attraction and traces its origin back to Newton. While its initial use was in the study of astronomy, with time, the theory gained importance in understanding electricity and magnetism. This book is a comprehensive guide to the theory of attraction, helping readers comprehend problems in the fields of fluid motion, stress, and elastic solids. One chapter focuses on how the theory can be used in the examination of rotating liquids, too. Various mathematical tools are taught in the book to assist the reader's understanding of the subject, and questions invite the reader to test their understanding. Not one to shy away from the complex, the author includes elements of unipolar attraction, conjugate functions, and the magnetic behaviour of bodies that have finite dimensions.
