A Farce, in two acts, by T. Merchant. Svo. No date. This enter tainment, which is said to have been performed with the most flattering approbation at the The atre Royal, Manchester, was print ed at Huddersfield, in a volume, including also the author's Fit gitive Pieces in Prose and Verse. The name of fiferchant, we under stand to have been a fictitious one, assumed at that time by Mr. Thomas Bildin. - There is little plot, but considerable humour, in this piece, which has been since acted, for a benefit, at Cor ent Garden, under the latter title only. 14. Thi: iviad-house. A Re hearsal of a new Ballad Opera, burlesqued, called the mad Housz, after the manner of Pas quin, by R. Baker. Acted at Lin coln's Inn Fields. 8vo. 1737. 15. The mad-house. But. By W. C. Oulton. Dublin. 12mo. 1785. 16. The mad lover. Tragi Com. By Beaumont and Fletcher. Fol. 16-17; 8vo. 1778. This play is particularly commended by Sir Aston Cokain, in his copy of verses on Fletcher's plays. The scene lies at Paphos. The plot of Cleanthe's suborning the priest to give a false oracle, in favour of her brother Syphax, is borrowed from the story of Mundus and Paulina, in Josephus, book xviii. Ch. 4. 17. The mad Lovsn. There would seem to have been an opera, with this title [see Acrs and GA latea, Masque, by Motteux] but we have not met with it; nor do we find it mentioned in any former list. 18. The madman. Burletta. Performed at Marybone Gardens. 4to. 1770.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book is the most up-to-date and comprehensive biography of the renowned Scottish poet and playwright James Thomson (1700-1748), author of 'The Seasons' and 'Rule, Britannia!', as well as a tragic love story, 'Sophonisba'. The author has assembled a wealth of new information on Thomson's life and works, drawing not only on published sources, but also on unpublished letters, manuscripts and account books. This book provides an insightful account of Thomson's early career as a student and minister, and his later rise to fame as a literary figure in London. It offers a nuanced understanding of Thomson's literary circle, including his relationships with figures such as David Mallet, Allan Ramsay and Samuel Johnson, and a reassessment of his poetry in the context of Jacobite politics, Enlightenment thought, and Scottish national identity.
