While the Arabs yet wandered over the desert, dividing their time between the care of their flocks and petty warfare, the atten tion they paid to language augured and facilitated their future cul tivation. It appears instinctive in man in every stage of society to pique himself on the purity of his speech. Even the Green lander mocks the stranger who mispronounces his uncouth poly syllables; and we find that language frequently attains, as among the Indians of North America, a high degree of copiousness and regularity, long previous to any social or literary advancement.
