Tm; studies contained in this volume en deavor to add to popular knowledge of older European literature, by giving detailed illustra tions of its condition at several periods be tween the sixth and the sixteenth centuries. It is believed that the material, although in part unfamiliar, will be of interest to readers of both English and continental writers. The papers were prepared originally as academic studies, then adapted and used as lectures be fore popular audiences, and, finally, recast into their present form. The first two are re printed, by permission, from The Citizen. The others are now printed for the first time.
