L'auteur de Lucifer jouissait d'un prestige et d'une popu larité considérables. Il avait réussi, par ses efforts enthousiastes et la force communicative de sa conviction, à créer ce que l'on pourrait appeler d'un nom barbare, la musicalisation des Flandres, c'est - à-dire le goût de la musique chantée. Il lui suffisait d'un s1gne pour rassembler, quand il le fallait, des centaines d'amateurs. Grâce à lui, Anvers disposa bientôt de sociétés chorales aguerries. Mais, dans son ardeur de prosélytisme, Peter Benoît ne se bornait pas à cette propagande purement matérielle son action s'étendait plus loin, son but était plus haut. Aide de quelques écrivains, et écrivain lui même, il défendait et faisait triompher des idées nou velles qui allaient amener une véritable révolution dans les traditions musicales en honneur j usque-là.
