Excerpt from The Supremacy and Obligation of Conscience: Considered With Reference to the Opposite Errors of Romanism and Protestantism
The reader Who is acquainted with the admirable lectures of Bishop Sanderson will see that I have followed him not only in his general outlines, but in several particulars, most of which are specified in the notes. I confess that-i found it diffi cult to write on Conscience without being indebted to this famous casuis't; and if what I have said shall have the effect to excite inquiry and demand for his Writings on the subject, I shall think my own labors amply rewarded.
The discourses have been in part re-written since they were preached; a circumstance which I deem it proper to mention, in order that I may be held alone responsible for their sentiments.'

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. Exploring the intricate relationship between conscience and authority, this book delves into the Protestant view of the supremacy of conscience. It examines how conscience, as an innate moral compass, is the ultimate arbiter of individual actions, superior to external authorities. Yet, this supremacy is tempered by the obligation to follow divine laws, which are both inward and outward. The author highlights the dangers of either extreme: denying the supremacy of conscience or ignoring its obligations. Through historical and contemporary examples, the book offers insights into the tensions between personal conviction and external governance, shedding light on the complex interplay of faith, reason, and authority in shaping human conduct.
