Excerpt from The Question of Registry or No Registry Considered: With Reference to the Interests of Landowners and Commercial Credit, in a Letter to the Right Honorable Robert Peel
T HE question of registry or no registry is one of the few relating to the laws of real pro perty which are capable of being understood and judged of by what may be termed lay~readers, by the uninitiated. A very little consideration will be sufficient to enable any one to form an opinion on the point, and the importance of the subject will more than repay the trouble. To those to whom the present question, and even the General State of the Laws of Real Property, are entirely new, the evils which arise from the want of a General Registry may be shortly stated, as follows.

This book offers a critique of the state of real property laws in England during the 19th century, focusing on the absence of a public registry system for land ownership. It emphasizes the prevalence of fraud and disputes arising from the lack of transparency and accessibility of land ownership records. The book draws on historical and legal contexts to highlight the evolution and implications of this issue and suggests that the introduction of a public registry system would resolve these challenges. The author emphasizes that such a system would provide clarity and security to property ownership, thereby protecting individuals from fraudulent practices and strengthening the legal framework governing real property.
