Excerpt from Book of Tables Giving the Cubic Contents of From One to Thirty Pieces Deals, Battens and Scantlings of the Sizes Usually Imported or Used in the Building Trades: Together With an Appendix Showing a Large Number of Sizes, the Contents of Which May Be Found by Referring to the Aforesaid Tables
As far as the writer knows, the books at present in use for calculating the cubic contents of deals, battens and scantlings give the contents of only a very limited number of lineal feet - perhaps to the extent of 50 or 80 - and he is of Opinion that a book giving the calculation of a number of pieces of a given dimension would be of greater advantage to the Timber Trade. Of course, all books of tables must necessarily be limited in their scope. The contents of from I to 30 pieces are given here, but it will be easy to find multiples of these numbers when it is desired to calculate larger quantities. The book is issued in the hope that it may prove of much use to Timber Merchants, Timber Brokers, Importers, Carpenters, and all who have occasion to convert a number of pieces of wood, of a given length, breadth and thickness, into cubic feet, inches and parts.
