Excerpt from The Quest of Faith: Being Notes on the Current Philosophy of Religion
The essays here offered to the reader deal in the main with the question of religious belief. They deal only with such aspects of it as have lately attracted notice; and this is a restriction attended, I venture to think, with some advantage. Except in the shape which from time to time is most obvious and definite, the question, for all but special students, has little vitality. Moreover, unless some limit Of the kind be imposed, the treatment of it is apt to become a mere academic exercise. If the objection be raised that any discussion which is confined to certain aspects Of a subject must needs be fragmentary and inconclusive, I submit that on so vast a theme as Religion no inquiry can well be final or exhaustive, and that here at least I make small claim to any positive result. There is the humble task of surveying a portion Of the ground, and, as far as may be, of tracing indications.
