Excerpt from The Physiological, Pathological and Therapeutical Effects of Compressed Air
Dr. Henshaw, an English physician, published an essay in 1664, in which he proposed to treat diseases by varying the pressure Of the atmosphere by which the patient was surrounded. His idea was to have a room (domiciliam) constructed of masonry, and made air-tight, in which the Sick person could remain in an atmosphere which was to be either rarefied or con densed by the action Of an organ bellows.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book details the history and effects of using compressed air in engineering projects, focusing on the medical implications. The author, a physician who oversaw the medical care of workers building the New York City Bridge, documents the physiological effects of working in a highly pressurized environment and the conditions that could arise from this work, such as pain, increased heart rate, and changes in respiratory function, digestion, and waste elimination. The author also discusses prior research on the subject as well as the use of compressed air as a therapeutic treatment for various conditions, often in the form of pressurized chambers. The book provides valuable insights into the effects of compressed air on the human body and its potential applications in both engineering and medicine.
