Excerpt from Married, Vol. 3 of 3: A Tale
I said this as he lighted the candle, holding the letter in my hand the while. When the light fell upon it, and my eyes, dazzled with the coming out of the darkness could hardly see, I glanced eagerly at the letter, for I was always looking out for something very nice to come in by the post.
But it was not for me, it was for Brice, and the direction was fairly and legibly written in a lady's hand. This was the first letter which had ever been sent to his private residence in a lady's hand, and of course I expected to share it with him. But, instead of this, he took it quietly up, and placed it in his breast pocket.
