It explores the origins of Presbyterian tenets in the Church of England, and how the movement spread during the reign of Elizabeth I. These Puritans, also known as Precisians, sought to purify the Church of England from within, by removing what they saw as unscriptural elements and practices. The author illuminates the emergence of a Presbyterian party, led by the influential thinker Thomas Cartwright who issued a famous critique of the established church. The book explores the further development of Presbyterian principles, the establishment of parochial presbyteries and their efforts to secure reform through the English Parliament. However, it also examines the period of repression under Archbishop Whitgift, who used the ex-officio oath to purge Presbyterian-leaning clergy from the Church of England. The book concludes by mapping the survival of Presbyterianism in the face of persecution, its exile to the Netherlands and its re-emergence in England in the seventeenth century.
