Excerpt from Parturition and the Principles and Practice of Obstetrics
I began to study Reflex Obstetrics in 1842, and the present work is the result of seven years' close and earnest atten tion to the subject. I may say truly, that during this time, though much occupied by other matters, it has scarcely ever been absent from my waking thoughts.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book is a detailed exploration of the topic of medical obstetrics, a branch of medicine that concerns delivering babies. It is an examination of the transition of obstetrics from an art passed down primarily through midwife apprenticeship into a fully-fledged academic discipline. Drawing on historical context, the book traces the evolution of the field over centuries. It notably highlights breakthroughs from the Renaissance to 19th-century Europe in terms of tools, techniques, and an understanding of the biological processes at play in childbirth. Among the key figures whose contributions are discussed at length are William Hunter, a renowned Enlightenment-era physician, and Sir Charles Bell, whose research in the early 1800s illuminated the workings of the nervous system. The text concludes by underscoring how the field of medical obstetrics continues to evolve through ongoing research into its central subject â" the act of giving birth.
