Excerpt from Adoption Versus Annexation: With Remarks on the Mysore Question
An Englishman regards his house as his castle. An English annexationist is, we suppose, no ex ception. When he preaches the levelling policy of annexation, and dilates on popular rights, the good of the people, and such plausible stuff, he, of course, imagines himself to be taking high ground. But, we ask, does he do to others as he wishes others should do to him? It is one thing to introduce reforms at the expense of others, and quite another thing to do so at the sacrifice of self.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book compellingly argues against the view that adoption proceedings, particularly among the nobility of India, must be approved by Great Britain. The author, a native of India, provides an in-depth explanation of Hindu law and custom as they relate to adoption, including specific examples of how adoptions have been legally upheld. The author further argues that the British government's doctrine of lapse, which allows it to annex territories of Indian rulers who die without natural or adopted heirs, is a violation of both Hindu law and the principles of natural justice. This book is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of British colonialism in India, as well as for those interested in the legal and cultural aspects of adoption.
