Excerpt from The Detection of Criminal Abortion, and a Study of Fœticidal Drugs
The luxury of an abortion is now within the reach of the serving-girl. An old man in this city performs this service for ten dollars, and takes his pay in instal manta.
Let the following instance illustrate the reckless dis regard some women, who possess this moral obliquity, have of the rights of the husband. It is only a year or so ago, that a woman, young and interesting, and the wife of 'a young medical man, came to me for such a purpose. When I stated the certainty of detection by her hus band, from the symptoms, she informed me, to my great surprise, that she had once successfully carried out such a plan of deception. Her husband supposed the i' show was a healthy renewal of her menses, which are often times profuse, after an interruption of two or three months. I watched her from the window of my office, and saw her enter the den of a notorious abortionist nearly opposite. I have no doubt of her success in again deceiving her husband. He was a man of aver age medical attainment, and had served as a surgeon during the late war.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book examines the methods used by both lay people and medical professionals to detect cases of criminal abortion in a time when the procedure fell into a legal grey area. Drawing on case studies, the author explores the ways in which physicians can identify whether a miscarriage was the result of illegal intervention, assessing the symptoms and using a range of tools, from physical examinations to temperature readings, to make their determinations. The author argues that the detection of these cases is critical, as it not only ensures that justice is served but also helps to protect women from unscrupulous practitioners and potentially dangerous and fatal outcomes.
