IN this First Book, the Practical, and Let the Theoretical part of Arithmetic is treated of, but it is not intended that Theory should be separated from Practice. The teacher may, by means Of a blackboard and a piece of chalk, make the pupils more readily understand the 1rules than could be done by any written ex~ planation, especially at this stage of their progress.
For the Theoretical part of Arithmetic, teachers and monitors are referred to the Sec ond Book of Arithmetic, published by the Commissioners.
