This book provides a detailed history of the establishment and administration of the University of Toronto, focusing on the religious and political conflicts that shaped its development. The author explores the tension between the desire for a provincially funded and governed institution and the influence of the Church of England, which had been granted a charter to establish Kings College in 1827. The book traces the efforts of various religious and political groups to have a say in the university's governance and curriculum, examining the impact of the Baldwin Bill of 1843 and the eventual establishment of the University of Toronto in 1849.
