Excerpt from La Folie de J.-J. Rousseau

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. Surging with emotion and dark with paranoia, 'The Madness of J.J. Rousseau' is the story of a man whose fierce passion and courage stood hand-in-hand with instability. The author, an alienist doctor, offers a piercing analysis of Rousseau's character. Rousseau's unique temperament, with its sharp peaks and deep valleys of manic euphoria and soul-crushing melancholia, the author argues, directly informed Rousseau's political philosophy and his literary genius, yet also brought him to the brink of madness and made him prone to delusion and obsession. Was Rousseau, widely regarded as one of the most important figures of the Enlightenment, a madman? Or was his 'madness' integral to his special genius? This book goes beyond the question of Rousseau's sanity, examining the intersections between madness and creativity and morality, and in doing so, provokes a timely and profound discussion on the nature of mental illness.
