Bien avant que le baron Haussmann eût commencé la transformation architecturale de Paris, certains quar tiers avaient déjà subi des changements moins visibles, dont ceux-là seuls pouvaient s'apercevoir qui, tout en différant des Parisiens par la nationalité, l'éducation, les habitudes, les goûts, avaient pourtant été élevés et avaient grandi parmi eux. A vrai dire, Paris devint, jusqu'à un certain point, cosmopolite, sans s'en douter, et sans que son aspect extérieur fût sensiblement modifié, avant qu'on eût seulement rêvé les demeures somptueuses, les larges avenues, les superbes jardins publics qui devaient plus tard exciter l'admiration du monde civilisé.
L'établissement des chemins de fer en fut surtout la cause, en amenant de l'étranger et de la province un véritable flot humain qui troubla profondément dans ses habitudes le véritable Parisien.
