Excerpt from A View of the Rise, Progress, and Present State of the Newfoundland Fishery<br/><br/>(1827) to provide for the deficiency by imposing an additional duty on rum and spirits and a duty of 25 per ce11t.on all goods not already liable to ditty im ported into Newfoundland, but representations having been made to His Majesty' 3 government that the fishery was not in a state to bear any fu1ther imposi tions, the measure was for the present abandoned, and the usual estimate for the year voted; it is however the intention of the government to resume the mea sure in the ensuing session of Parliament and to im pose a tax upon the island, but of what nature and to what extent is not yet determined. 41.
