A boy grows up with the ideology of the Hitler Youth and the opposing moral values of his parents. At age 16 he operates an antiaircraft cannon, then survives the horrors of the Russian front and ends up in a POW camp. In the post-war depression he works his way through premedical school as an embalmer. A few weeks after graduation from medical school he emigrates to Canada on a small freighter with 10 dollars in his pocket. Against many odds he succeeds in an unconventional medical career in three different countries.
