Reseña del editor:
The dramatic shifts in the global political economy since the 1970s, and the financial crisis of 1997, had a decisive impact on economic, political and socio-cultural dimensions of people's lives. These and other aspects of globalisation have deeply affected the prospects for democratic development in Asia. This book offers critical perspectives on recent and long term trends in economic, socio-cultural and political life of the people of Asia under globalisation and examines the policies and constraints faced by the nation-states. It discusses the possibilities for expanding and consolidating existing democratic spaces, under the pressure of market reforms. It provides new insights into the prospects for democratic consolidations in the region. The book also explores the ways of going beyond the official and elitist discourses on constitutional democracy and economic development. It discusses the complex challenges of deepening poverty and highlights the obstacles to the empowerment of marginalized communities, including women and ethno-religious minorities. It suggests ways to engender development through grassroots democracy.
