From the Author:

It was never my intention to write this book, but two things happened to convince me otherwise. First, I kept getting feedback from readers.

The second reason is that every time my column gets published, I lose some control over the content and length of the finished product. This book remedies that. What you read herein, for better or worse, is exactly what’s on my mind, no sugar coating, no mamby-pamby, no gyrations to make some editor-who-knows-nothing-about-construction happy.

For those of you who’ve read my columns before, I guarantee you’ve not read these versions. No one has. These are the uncensored originals, though I’ve gone back and revised each, adding sketches and text, and taking whatever liberties I felt appropriate to better get my point across.

From the Inside Flap:

Here's what industry professionals are saying about Tim Garrison - The Builder's Engineer (tm):

"WOW! Tim, AMEN!!!! This article ["How Do You Spell Extortion?"] is truly a "hitting it on the head of a nail" concept. I love it.
-Tamilee Taylor-Depre, Executive Officer, Arrowhead Builders Association

"Right F___ing on!" [on "Cactus League Here I Come!"]
-Ted L. Clifton, CVH Inc.

"As everyone else, I routinely glance at my NAHB e-mail newspaper headlines and sometimes actually read a few. I have never, even upon invitation, been compelled to respond until now. [on Shelf-Life of a Business Partner] Please continue to share your talents Tim."
-George P. Henley, Vice-President, Grendahl Construction Inc.

"I just wanted you to know that I think your column is the most valuable content in the NAHB's weekly e newsletter. I especially enjoy your conversational style. Keep up the good work. Was that story about the two young surveyors and the cows really true?"
-Patrick McCombe, Associate Editor, Journal of Light Construction and other Hanley Wood Magazines

"Tim--I love reading your articles. Since I'm a magazine editor (Tools of the Trade) I might pay a little more attention, I think, to your writing. You're funny, the pieces are well-composed, and your personality shows through, which is so welcome in business writing, which is generally drier than Phoenix. Add to that, you know what you're talking about and I enjoy the topics you pick. Keep it up."
-Mark Clement is the author of The Carpenter’s Notebook, Kid’s Carpenter’s Workbook, and Executive Editor of Tools of the Trade magazine.

"Just wanted to let you know I read your column and enjoy it very much. Please keep up the good work!"
-Karen Daulton Lange, P.E., Vice President, Kennedy Land Development, Inc

"Of all the articles concerning the building and real estate business that come to the office each week your short articles are some of the most worth while. I print them and have our superintendents review them with our sub-contractors and construction personnel each week. It hold their attention and is a lead in to the OSHA tail gate presentations. Simple information that we all should know is often not known by the field personnel. The are not normally formally trained in engineering or architectural principles. These "short courses" are a very informative way to explain basic principles without boring them to death. "Good Job"."
-Spike Rumley

"I've been meaning to write and tell you how much I enjoy your columns that run in Nation's Building News. You provide sound advice in each of them and have a real flair for writing. I know what a challenge it is to come with interesting leads and headlines, and you do that as well."
-Jill Tunick, Communications Manager, Business Management Dept. National Association of Home Builders

"I look for and enjoy your column every time it appears. It is usually the first thing I read when I get the newsletter. Last week I received my email notifying me that the latest edition was complete and when I went to look at the newsletter it had a new format and no "Builder's Engineer" column. I was very disappointed and figured that you had been cut out with the new format. I was so glad this week when I went to look at the newsletter and your column reappeared. Please keep doing the column. I enjoy reading about some of the problems that you bring up, you wisdom in how to handle them, and your sense of humor in how to maintain your professionalism and my sanity."
-Bill Fink, Atlanta, GA
