Z. Philip Ambrose is the Lyman-Roberts Professor of Classical Languages and Literature and Chair of the Department of Classics at the University of Vermont. He is a musician and has published studies of the classical influence upon Bach's poets. Ambrose's English translations of the extant vocal works of Johann Sebastian Bach preserve the meter and where possible the original placement of the principle nouns and verbs. They are intended for listeners and interpreters as a guide to the original texts and to Bach's own "translation" of these texts into music. This book is to be used in tandem with the regularly updated online version, where searches of the both the translations and the original texts are available: http://www.uvm.edu/~classics/faculty/bach/
